Drivers buy automobile insurance to pay for vehicle damage, bodily injury and other losses that result from motor vehicle accidents, theft, vandalism and other such occurrences. In New Jersey, it has been illegal to drive without the required automobile insurance since 1972.

In New Jersey, consumers can choose to purchase either a standard or basic automobile insurance policy. The standard policy provides a wide variety of coverage options that are not available under the basic policy. State law requires vehicle owners to purchase certain minimum limits of liability and first-party medical coverage.
