What To Do If You Are Involved In A Car Accident
-
If you're involved in one of the more than 290,000 accidents that occur
annually in the Garden State, here are a few reminders that may help.
-
Stop the car and see if anyone is injured. Have someone call the police and
report the accident. The police will notify the nearest medical unit.
-
Try to prevent further damage or injury. Set up flashers or flares to warn
oncoming motorists of the accident. If your vehicle is operable, pull off
to the side of the road.
-
Write down the names, addresses and phone numbers of witnesses.
-
Write down the name, addresses, phone numbers of all drivers and passengers
involved in the accident. Also take down the license plate numbers,
insurance information and the makes and models of the vehicles.
-
Do not discuss the accident with anyone involved or admit that you think
you were at fault. Traffic laws vary from one jurisdiction to another,
and you may not be at fault.
-
Take photos if you have a camera, to provide documentation. Make notes
about the time of day, the weather, and road conditions and how the
accident took place.
-
Provide any information the police may request. Find out where to obtain a
copy of the accident report, and write down the names and badge numbers of
police officers or emergency personnel.
-
If your vehicle is towed, get the name and address of the towing company
and the name of the truck operator.
-
Call your insurance agent immediately.
-
Try to remain calm. If you maintain your composure, you'll remember to
gather all the necessary information at the scene.
