Tips for the Parents of New Drivers

  • Set a good example for your new driver with your own driving habits. Obey traffic laws and observe safe driving practices.

  • Have your child take some financial responsibility for their driving privilege - paying for maintenance, insurance or gas. Teach them that there is more involved with having a car than driving.

  • Insist that all teenage passengers in your child's car have their parents' permission.

  • Make sure your teen has a safe car to drive. Think safety features such as airbags and antilock brakes that reduce the risk of injury in an accident. Remember that larger cars are safer than smaller cars.

  • Enroll your teen in a defensive driving course.

  • Link driving privileges to school performance or overall behavior.

  • Require them to call if they'll be more than 30 minutes late.
