Sobering Tips for Drivers
-
Never drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Never let your
friends drink and drive.
-
Never ride with a driver who is drunk.
-
Before going out, set up a car pool, and arrange for someone in the group to
remain sober and be the "designated driver."
-
Know your limitations. If you have been drinking, take a cab home, or ask a
friend who has not been drinking to give you a ride home. Do not try to
drive yourself.
When having a party:
-
Suggest that guests hand over their keys to you upon arriving at the party.
Return keys to drivers only if they are sober.
-
Take the keys away from any drivers who are intoxicated, and ask them to
stay overnight, or drive them home, or arrange for a ride.
-
Serve plenty of nonalcoholic beverages and high-protein foods that help
absorb alcohol in the bloodstream.
-
Avoid carbonated mixers in favor of non-carbonated ones (such as fruit juice).
Carbonation speeds alcohol absorption.
-
Refrain from overdrinking yourself so that as the host you can judge your
guests' behavior correctly.
-
Do not push your guests to drink.
-
Stop serving alcohol at least one hour before the party is supposed to
end.
If you are the parents of young drivers:
-
Talk to your teens about drunk driving, and offer to come pick them up
anytime they are intoxicated.
-
Find out about MADD, SADD or RID chapters in your area and about what you
can do to help prevent drunk driving.
