Homeowners' insurance got its start as protection against fire losses. In fact, one of the first
successful fire insurance companies in the United States was started by Benjamin Franklin when
he helped found the Philadelphia Contributionship for Insurance of Houses from Loss by Fire in
1753. Homeowners' insurance, however, has expanded its coverage since those times. Today,
there are millions of homes in America that are susceptible to different types of losses - from fires
and storms to theft, the homeowners' policy is intended to help the homeowner minimize the risks
involved in owning a home.
