The personal liability portion of a homeowners insurance policy protects you from claims and
lawsuits resulting from damages or accidents occurring on your property or elsewhere.
It pays damages, legal defense fees and court awards if you, a member of your family or your
pet is responsible for injuries or property damage to others.
Additional liability coverage called an umbrella policy can be purchased separately from your
standard policy to insure you for greater liability amounts. Umbrella coverage starts paying
losses after you have reached the limits of your regular policy.
