Most policies cover destruction of or damage to structures on your property such as the house, garage and sheds. Coverage also includes the contents of the house and other items such as trees and shrubs outside. The amount of property protection coverage offered through a typical homeowners policy is limited. Valuable personal items, such as jewelry, artwork and silver, should be fully insured through an endorsement or "floater" or "rider" to the homeowners policy. An endorsement is a written form attached to an insurance policy that alters the policy's coverage terms and conditions.
